Why Become a Driving Instructor?

Becoming a driving instructor is an excellent career choice for those who value independence and enjoy a challenge. It’s not just about teaching a valuable skill; it’s about helping learners pass their tests and making a positive impact on road safety.

How to Become a Driving Instructor

1. Apply to Become a Driving Instructor

Before you begin your training, you need to register with the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). You must be over 21, have held a driving licence for over three years without motoring convictions, and pass a new Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Check Your Eligibility: Verify your eligibility on the DVSA website.

2. Get a Trainer

While official training isn’t required to take the ADI tests, bespoke training significantly increases your chances of passing. GP Instructor Training offers industry-leading programs that prepare you for the tests and teach you the practicalities of being a driving instructor.

3. Take the Theory Test (ADI Part 1)

  • Cost: £81
  • Requirements: UK photocard driving licence
  • Format: 100 multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test (14 video clips).

4. Take the Driving Ability Test (ADI Part 2)

  • Car Requirements: Must meet DVSA standards.
  • Test Components:
    • Eyesight check
    • ‘Show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions
    • General driving ability

    • Independent driving

To pass, you must record no more than 6 driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults.

  • Assessment: Graded on a scale from 0 to 51. A score of 43-51 is Grade A, indicating a high level of instruction.
