ADI Part 3 assesses your ability to deliver an effective client-centred driving lesson while managing risk and adapting your teaching to the pupil in front of you.
Our training concentrates on developing your ability to recognise what your pupil needs, choose an appropriate response and adapt the lesson as it develops.
The aim is not to give you a rigid Part 3 script. It is to help you understand why, when and how to act as the instructor.
The ADI Part 3 assessment is structured around 17 competencies within three key areas.
Developing a lesson with clear goals that reflects the pupil's experience, needs and ability.
Recognising developing risk, sharing responsibility appropriately and taking action at the right time.
Using appropriate teaching, coaching, questioning, feedback and reflection to support learning.
One of the practical tools used within our training is the 5Rs & 3Is.
It gives you a simple structure for recognising what is happening and deciding what level of support your pupil needs.
What are you seeing from the pupil and the developing situation?
Choose the appropriate level of support.
Invite — allow the pupil to think and respond.
Instruct — provide clear guidance when more support is required.
Intervene — take appropriate action when safety requires it.
Help the pupil understand what happened, develop the solution and carry the learning forward.
Good instruction isn't simply spotting a fault after it has happened.
We develop your ability to anticipate where support may be required, recognise changes in pupil performance and respond early enough to maintain safety while still allowing learning to take place.
Control before educate. Prevention before cure.
Training is adapted around your current ability rather than treating every PDI in exactly the same way.
Setting meaningful goals, agreeing roles and responsibilities and adapting the plan as the lesson develops.
Recognising risk earlier, deciding when to invite, instruct or intervene and ensuring responsibility is appropriate for the pupil.
Creating genuine pupil involvement rather than simply delivering a predetermined lesson.
Learning when to ask, when to tell and how to drill down with follow-up questions that develop understanding.
Moving beyond identifying what happened to explore why it happened and what needs to change.
Helping the pupil recognise progress, understand development needs and take learning into the next situation.
Part 3 development needs to work in a real lesson, not just in a classroom.
Observation allows us to look at what you're actually doing with the pupil — what you recognise, when you respond, how you manage risk and whether your teaching is creating meaningful learning.
Feedback can then focus on the specific behaviours that will improve your instructional ability.
Build your understanding of the competencies and develop the instructional skills needed for the assessment.
Use real pupil lessons to develop planning, risk management, coaching, feedback and reflection.
If you've had an unsuccessful attempt, training can focus specifically on the areas identified in your result and your live instructional performance.
Each of the 17 competencies is scored from 0 to 3, producing a maximum overall score of 51.
Risk management is particularly important. A score of 7 or less in the risk management section results in an unsuccessful test, as can the examiner stopping the lesson because of danger.
Always check current DVSA guidance before your test.
