Mastering the ADI Part 3 Test: A Key Step in Your Driving Instructor Journey
The ADI Part 3 Test, overseen by a DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) examiner, is a pivotal assessment in your career as a driving instructor. This test, focusing on a client-centered driving lesson lasting about an hour, is crucial for evaluating your adherence to the national standards for driver and rider training.
Choosing the Ideal Pupil for Your ADI Part 3 Test
For the ADI Part 3 Test, eligible pupils range from beginners to full license holders. However, currently approved driving instructors (ADIs) or those preparing for the ADI Part 3 test themselves are not eligible to participate. While trainers or mentors can accompany you, their direct involvement in the lesson is not permitted.
Essential Evaluation Criteria in the ADI Part 3 Test
Your performance in the ADI Part 3 test will be assessed across 17 vital competencies, categorized into three main areas:
- Lesson Planning
- Risk Management
- Teaching and Learning Strategies
These competencies are graded on a scale from 0 to 3, with your cumulative score determining your overall qualification and grade, as outlined in the ADI Part 3 test report form.
Interpreting Your ADI Part 3 Test Outcomes
After your lesson, the DVSA examiner will analyze your performance and provide you with your test results:
- 0-30: Fail – Reflects inadequate performance for ADI registration.
- 31-42: Grade B – Indicates satisfactory performance, making you eligible for ADI registration.
- 43-51: Grade A – Denotes a high level of instruction, qualifying for ADI registration.
Scenarios for automatic failure include scoring below 8 in ‘risk management’ or having the lesson terminated by the examiner due to safety risks.
